<repository> Repository

<repository> is used to encode information about the institution or agency responsible for providing intellectual access to the materials being described. The repository’s proper name may be encoded within <repository>, using the <corpname> element. Its address may also be included, using the <address> element and its subelement <addressline>.

Usually, the repository providing intellectual access also has physical custody. However, if the materials (physical or electronic) have a different custodian, it should be identified in <physloc>, while <repository> designates the intellectual caretaker.

While <repository> may occur within <archref>, <entry>, <event>, <extref>, <extrefloc>, <item>, <label>, <p>, <ref>, and <refloc>, I’ve chosen to describe it while going through subelements of <did>. Despite being a fairly generic element, it is an important part of the descriptive information about the materials.

Attributes

  • ALTRENDER – not required. Use if the content of the element should be displayed or printed differently than the rendering established in a style sheet for other occurrences of the element.
  • AUDIENCE – not required. Use to set whether the element’s contents will be visible to external users or to internal ones. Possible values are: “internal” and “external.”
  • ID – not required. Creates an ID for element. Can be used for linking.
  • ENCODINGANALOG – not required. May contain information to map this tag to a particular element in another schema.
  • LABEL – not required. This can be used when a meaningful display label for an element can’t be derived by the stylesheet from its name. It is available in all <did> subelements.

Subelements

<repository> will likely PCDATA. It may include <subarea>. It can also include the following generic subelements: <abbr>, <address>, <archref>, <bibref>, <corpname>, <emph>, <expan>, <extptr>, <extref>, <lb />, <linkgrp>, <name>, <ptr>, <ref>, and <title>.

DACS

Use DACS 2.2 Name and Location of Repository. Required. (DACS 2013, p.16)

Our EAD file so far

Since I’m personally holding the materials, I’m just going to enter a fake repository name:

<p>This inventory was prepared as part of the EADiva website to demonstrate EAD encoding of finding aids. It encodes information about the collection of the papers of Sarah Bell Kitchin as well as made-up information used to make the finding aid use more example elements. Like this one.</p></div>
